Edward, thank you for your comments. I realized that this posting was done almost 1.5 years ago and things have changed. A lot. And, you are absolutely true that we are seeing a new and expanded role of UX everywhere. Many firms I interacted with see voice-activated AI as a new layer of UX. As more and more companies (even the traditional ones) are thinking about "digital first" even in the physical space, the role of UX will become even more important. At the same time, the role of industrial design will become will continue as more and more digital will wear the physical cloth and hardware must blend seamlessly with the software. At the end, I believe each company will choose which one will lead their overall design strategy, depending on their relative strength. However, the trend of the seamless blending of physical and digital will continue.
